India’s Silicon Turn – Tata, Merck and the Rise of Dholera’s Semiconductor Hub
By Aum Realties•

When we talk about smart cities, we often focus on infrastructure roads, utilities, digital grids.
But what truly defines a future-ready city is its ability to attract, nurture, and scale high-tech
innovation. That’s the transformation now taking place in Dholera, Gujarat.
As part of India’s semiconductor mission, Dholera Special Investment Region (Dholera SIR) has
become home to the country's first large-scale semiconductor fabrication plant. Backed by a
massive ₹99,000 crore investment, the project is being developed in partnership with Taiwan’s
Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC). This mega fab is a cornerstone of
India's vision to become self-reliant in chip manufacturing and establish itself as a global
technology hub.
Adding further strength to the ecosystem, German science and tech giant Merck is in advanced
discussions for an exclusive chemical supply agreement, securing the backend chemical
infrastructure essential for smooth semiconductor production. This collaboration is not just a
strategic alliance; it represents a critical supply chain commitment that reinforces Dholera’s
readiness to support one of the most sensitive and complex manufacturing sectors in the world.
To support the surge in high-skilled professionals, engineers, and scientists expected to relocate
to the region, the Gujarat government has sanctioned the development of residential
infrastructure. A 10-acre land parcel has been allotted for over 500 employee housing units, and
additional apartment complexes, service residences, and commercial spaces are planned
around the semiconductor zone. This blend of industrial and residential development makes
Dholera an integrated smart city, capable of supporting both economic activity and urban quality
of life.
Dholera’s appeal extends beyond industrial capacity. With its plug-and-play infrastructure,
investor-friendly policies, regulatory transparency, and proximity to the upcoming Dholera
International Airport and Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway, it offers a unique value proposition
for real estate and infrastructure investors. Land parcels in and around the activation area are
already seeing increased attention from forward-looking developers and private equity groups
focused on long-term tech-driven growth.
This isn’t just a factory project. It’s an ecosystem. A manufacturing engine. And a landmark in
India's journey toward high-value, high-tech self-sufficiency. With the convergence of global
players, government support, and infrastructure readiness, Dholera is earning its place as the
new epicentre of India’s semiconductor ambitions.

Investing in Dholera today means being part of a technology-led future—a future that's not only
imagined but actively under construction.
