PM Modi inaugurated Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway on March 31

AUM RealtiesAUM Realties4 April 2026

The Ahmedabad–Dholera Greenfield Expressway (NE‑08) has officially been inaugurated, marking a significant upgrade to road connectivity in Gujarat. The high‑speed corridor is set to transform travel between Ahmedabad and Dholera, while boosting trade, strengthening logistics networks, and accelerating overall regional development.

The Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway will dramatically enhance regional connectivity by reducing travel time between the two destinations to just 45 minutes. Spanning around 109 km, this 4-lane, access-controlled greenfield corridor follows a fresh alignment starting from Sarkhej near Ahmedabad, passing through Bavla, and extending to Adhelai near Dholera SIR. Designed for speeds of up to 120 km/h, the expressway is expected to boost trade, support infrastructure expansion, and drive economic growth across the region while offering a faster and more efficient alternative to existing routes.

In a landmark development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Ahmedabad–Dholera Greenfield Expressway on 31 March 2026 at 4 PM during his Gujarat visit, as confirmed by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and state government announcements. Built at a cost of around ₹5,100 crore under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, the project is positioned as one of the most important infrastructure links for the Dholera region.

The Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway is expected to act as a catalyst for trade, infrastructure development, and regional growth by offering faster, more predictable travel for both daily commuters and industrial traffic. This 109 km high‑speed corridor will also play a crucial role in supporting the development of the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR), enhancing logistics efficiency, and driving long‑term economic expansion across the region, as projected by state and central agencies.

Key Features of Ahmedabad Dholera Expressway

  1. Project cost: Around ₹5,100 crore, developed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana programme.

  2. Length: Approx. 109 km high‑speed greenfield corridor from Sarkhej–Bavla–Adhelai near Dholera SIR.

  3. Configuration: 4‑lane, access‑controlled expressway, engineered to be expandable to 8 lanes in future.

  4. Design speed and travel time: Designed for speeds up to 120 km/h; cuts the journey between Ahmedabad and Dholera from about 2 hours to roughly 45 minutes.

  5. Right‑of‑way and median: 30‑metre wide median planned for future lane expansion and parallel infrastructure.

  6. Closed tolling system: Distance‑based, closed tolling for seamless movement and fair, usage‑linked toll charges.

  7. Safety infrastructure: Crash barriers, modern signage, controlled entry and exit points, along with multiple flyovers, underpasses, and culverts to segregate local and through traffic.

  8. Major structures: 3 railway overbridges (ROBs), 11 interchanges, 14 flyovers, 86 underpasses and over 200 culverts to ensure uninterrupted high‑speed flow and safe crossings.

  9. Way‑side amenities: Two planned modern wayside facilities to serve commuters and freight operators along the corridor.

  10. Semi high‑speed rail provision: A planned semi high‑speed rail corridor running broadly parallel to the expressway, with a 30 m right‑of‑way already provisioned in planning documents.

Connectivity to Dholera International Airport and Smart‑City Support

The expressway is strategically aligned to connect industrial hubs, logistics parks, and key transport nodes across Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar districts while directly linking to the Dholera Special Investment Region. It provides seamless road access to the upcoming Dholera International Airport through an interchange near chainage 67, significantly strengthening the region’s multimodal connectivity.

Dholera International Airport, planned around 20 km from Dholera SIR near Navagam village, is being developed by Dholera International Airport Company Ltd. (AAI + Government of Gujarat + NICDC) and is expected to handle both domestic and international traffic in phases. The expressway–airport combination is expected to decongest Ahmedabad airport, support export‑oriented industries, and position Dholera as a major gateway for industry, logistics, and tourism.

By linking Ahmedabad with Dholera through key nodes like Sarkhej and Bavla and tying in with the proposed metro and semi high‑speed rail corridors in the wider planning framework, the project strengthens the long‑term vision of a well‑connected smart‑city region.

Enhanced Connectivity & Integration Across Gujarat

The Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway has been designed not just as a city‑to‑city link but as a backbone corridor connecting industrial estates, logistics hubs, DSIR, and future port and airport infrastructure. It is expected to reduce dependence on older, congested routes, improve reliability for freight operators, and provide smoother and faster movement for both passenger and goods vehicles.

By connecting to the coastal highway and integrating with Gujarat’s broader highway network, the corridor improves last‑mile connectivity for nearby towns and industrial clusters. This planning is aimed at helping industries operate more efficiently by ensuring predictable travel times and better access to key markets and ports.

Economic and Regional Impact of the Expressway

The Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway is expected to:

  • Reduce logistics and transportation costs for industries across Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar and the Dholera SIR catchment area.

  • Improve supply‑chain reliability by offering a high‑speed, access‑controlled route with closed tolling and minimal congestion.

  • Boost industrial growth and attract both domestic and foreign investment into DSIR and surrounding industrial zones.

  • Generate employment opportunities in construction, logistics, warehousing, manufacturing, services, and real estate.

  • Encourage real‑estate development, warehousing parks, and urban expansion along key interchanges and nodes.

  • Promote tourism and regional mobility by improving accessibility to Dholera and nearby coastal and heritage locations.

These benefits are projections based on government and project‑planner assessments; the actual economic impact will depend on future investment flows, pace of industrialisation, airport commissioning, and utilisation of the corridor over time.

Future Outlook for the Ahmedabad–Dholera Corridor

The Ahmedabad–Dholera Greenfield Expressway stands as a symbol of next‑generation infrastructure in India, combining high‑speed connectivity, safety, and long‑term economic potential. As Ahmedabad continues to grow as a major commercial and industrial hub, and as Dholera emerges as a futuristic smart‑city‑scale investment region anchored by DSIR and Dholera International Airport, this expressway will serve as a vital backbone for sustained regional development in Gujarat.
